A gift for someone who has everything

When the shelves are already full, the gift that lands is usually about the person rather than for the house.

A page from a personalized storybook about a husband
From a sample book we made. The person in it is invented, not a customer.

Why another thing rarely works

Someone who has everything usually bought it, exactly as wanted. Anything you choose in the same category competes with that taste, and loses. The gifts that work are the ones money alone could not buy: things about the person, made by or with you.

Research points the same way. In four experiments with nearly 1,800 people, gifts that are lived through strengthened relationships more than objects did, because of the feeling they create when they are used rather than when they are unwrapped.

Seven ideas

  1. A story starring the person. One photo, and the person becomes the main character of an illustrated storybook: a crown by accident, a cape for a day, a crew that is completely lost. See the 33 stories.
  2. A letter worth keeping. Handwritten, specific, and about one memory rather than general praise.
  3. A day, planned. Not a voucher: a date, a place and the bookings already made.
  4. Something old, restored. Old family photos scanned and repaired, or a worn favorite repaired properly.
  5. A family recipe collection. Gathered from relatives, written down in one place for the first time.
  6. A donation in the person’s name to a cause close to home, with a note saying why you chose it.
  7. Lessons in something mentioned more than once and never started.

Picking between them

Listen for the topics that come up when work does not. The answer usually points at one of the seven. If it points at humor, or at a person who secretly likes being the center of attention, the story is the one.

What do you get a man who has everything?

Something personal rather than practical: a storybook with the man drawn into it, a day planned together, or something old restored. More equipment rarely beats what is already on the shelf.

What is a good last-minute gift for someone who has everything?

A personalized storybook is usually ready within minutes and arrives as a link and a PDF, so it works even on the day.
